Chairman's View
The Australian Stock Horse Society reached a significant milestone when the first overseas branch came into being on the 22nd November, 2011.
A teleconference linked Australia with America as the first members of the American Executive were elected to form the American Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society. Keen to get started they have already held an inaugural event in Texas. We wish the committee all the best in their endeavour.
Equitana in Sydney proved a very successful event with thousands of people taking the time to visit. Our stand at Equitana was very popular with many people taking the opportunity to buy merchandise. Thank you to Sam Davidge who gave Australian Stock Horse demonstrations; Reg and Suzanne Ryan (Coolidowns) who provided a stand in the Breeds’ village; and to Dan Steers and Dan James (Double Dan Horsemanship) for their continued support and promotion of Australian Stock Horses.
On the Friday of Equitana all branches of the horse industry were invited to a meeting of RIRDC to discuss future options for providing funding to RIRDC. The current funding which provides money for research into horse health problems which RIRDC has organised over many years will discontinue in the near future. The Horse Industry was being asked how important this research was to the everyday rider and would they be prepared to help fund RIRDC to continue their work. In the future we may put a survey up on our website to get members’ opinions on this issue so please look for it.
Congratulations to Charlie Brooks whose polocrosse mare, Kildare Belle took out the prestigious Nat Buchanan trophy for 2011.
Following the successful colt sale by the Haydon Stud in October, the Tocal sale proved a great sale for the college in November and the Dalby sale followed in December with a great result. At all three sales the vendors and the agents spared no effort in presenting their horses to the best of their ability and the buyers responded by purchasing. It is great to see that in these tough economic times Australian Stock Horses are still in demand.
At the Haydon Sale I was impressed with 16 colts tied up together with never a whinny, which was a wonderful example of training and temperament. Well done Alison and Peter.
Warwick Lawrence, Lyn Walsh and Simone Harvey together with the students continue to do outstanding work in the Horse Course at Tocal College and a tremendous crowd turned out for their November Sale. They almost have a cult following of people who realise the great work going on at Tocal and they turn up in droves to buy the Tocal horses. This year as well as buyers attending to buy quiet, reliable horses, the top priced mare went to a top campdrafter. This will further increase the following of potential buyers.
Dalby had a great weekend starting out with their 40th Anniversary Dinner. John Lyons, President of the South Queensland Management Council, supported by wife Gwen and Queensland stalwart Lorna Fanning led a team that organised a great evening for all. Rick Young and the Darling Downs Branch gave a great Australian Stock Horse Display and organised the Sale. Well done!
The Board tried a first by holding their November Board Meeting in Sydney at the Headquarters of our bankers, Westpac. We may have looked a little rustic in the Westpac Boardroom but it certainly helped with travel for our interstate Directors.
I would like to remind members that Australian Stock Horses must always match their registration papers when they are being presented for sale or when they are competing at Australian Stock Horse events. Always make sure at any of these events you always have your papers available. The Society issues two sets, the original and a copy. For members competing the copy will suffice.
Years ago I learnt a great lesson from an old horseman called George McMullin who is mentioned in the Brian Brooker story in this issue and I will pass it on to you. I was showing my mare, J Star Felicity, at the Muswellbrook Rodeo and she had been doing particularly well in Led classes but at this show she placed third in the Led Mare. When I was coming out of the ring George said to me, 'Where did you come?' and I replied, 'I ONLY came third,' and George said, 'Third can be good it just depends who was in front of you.'
Till next time,
Joy Poole
